Wildlife Corridor Planting Project

I recently collaborated with North Brisbane Catchments Network on a new project that celebrates a locally occurring small Eucalyptus tree, the Eucalyptus curtisii, commonly known as either Plunkett Mallee or Brisbane mallee. The projects aims to introduce this small growing endangered Eucalyptus species to provide a food source for local native animals and insects including the Koala.

A great morning recently planting native plants @ Goldberg Place Park, Bridgeman Downs. Plants included Wattle, Coffee Bush, Hop Bush and Eucalyptus Curtisii.Chloe, Ken and Ashley made good use of NBC's new BCC funded hand cart to get 20L of water to within a metre of each new plant. Special thanks to Ashley of Gentle By Nature https://www.gentle-by-nature.com/ for donating the very healthy Eucalyptus Curtisii seedlings. This will make for improved wildlife corridor as extra cover for our native wildlife, including koalas.
Of particular note were the Eucalyptus Curtisiis. Apart from being food for koalas and contributing to the corridor, they are low growing which makes for much easier rescue of sick koalas.
They are known as Plunkett Mallees as they are from the Plunkett area near Beenleigh, south of Brisbane. Mallee describes the form with multiple trunks. However, the Curtisiis at Goldberg Place Park are being kept pruned to have one main central trunk, again for ease of koala rescue.

Planting of the new plants included providing tree guards to protect the plants during establishment
