MOUNT COOT-THA

Mount Coot-tha is the most important wildlife corridor in Brisbane. It is a large environmentally-sensitive ecosystem and home to many unique animal and plants including the Powerful Owl. At the base of Mount Coot-tha is the Brisbane Botanic Garden which displays collections of native plants from Australia and exotics species from others areas of the world.

Mount Coot-tha and adjoining Brisbane Forest Park are of great importance for birds and other wildlife – the largest block of bushland in greater Brisbane. This tract of bushland reaches an altitude of 705 metres, the highest point in the Brisbane area. Under climate change, some species of plants and animals may only survive if able to move to a higher elevation. Thus, why this area is part of the most important wildlife corridor in Brisbane.

The Brisbane City Council is creating a master plan within the protected Flora and Fauna reserves including the important wildlife corridors and within the Botanic gardens.

MASTER PLAN

The Brisbane City Council Master Plan will explore :

  • A 170-kilometre Brisbane Wilderness Trail connecting Mt Coot-tha to Mt Archer, with bush huts, glamping, composting toilets, and wayfinding.
  • A night-time light show in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens.
  • A revitalised Tropical Dome and reimagined Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium.
  • A tree-top walk at The Summit, designed for accessibility and immersive nature experiences.
  • Eco-tourism glamping and sustainable nature retreats.
  • A one-way loop road on Sir Samuel Griffith Drive with a dedicated cycling lane.
  • A long-term vision to transform the Mt Coot-tha Quarry into a must-visit destination once operations cease.

The aim of my Mount Coot-tha project is to offer my unique perspective on this place. I will communicate the existing beauty of Mount Coot-tha's animals and plants. My goal is to increase public awareness and appreciation and therefore contribute to its long term success as a place valued and celebrated and protected, primarily, as a Flora and Fauna Reserve and the most important wildlife corridor in Brisbane.
