Planning for Plantings: Our Process....
Once we are engaged for a project we initially commence desktop research then visit the property to assess the site. We are determining element's that inform the planting design including our clients preferences, budget and maintenance requirements; example, "a low maintenance native garden to provide habitat including a water feature for local animals infused with local natives, native food plants and herbs, featuring a bench seat placed as a focal point to be viewed from within the house ,set in a private space within the garden". We are assessing and recording the conditions that influence the future planting design and species selections, example: Sun/shade distribution, context: such as landscape connectivity and overland flow from neighbors or shade overhang, soil type and health, drainage and existing vegetation.
We are also responding to how the client may like to use the garden and if they have pets so all family members can be catered for....
We will take measurements if we need to draw a planting plan.
We then complete our site specific research including creating the plants species list, soil amendments design and mulch type. These are specific to the site and in response to the assessment made at the initial site visit.
The planting plan is then drawn to scale and shows the location of each new plant to be planted. The 1m2 grid makes it easy for accurate placement of each new plant. We recommend native species planted from 50mm tube stock grown locally by community nurseries in Brisbane. The abbreviated code on the plan allows for cross referencing to a table detailing the correct botanical names for each plant as part of our service. The plan and table with botanical names is valuable as it allows the garden owner to learn about each plants characteristics, when to prune and when it will flower or fruit etc and to identify where it is in the garden.
We also provide information on maintenance and ongoing advice as the garden develops to contribute to its successful establishment.
