Concept sketch by Tanya featuring local native species,Melastoma affine,Poa labillardieri and Imperata cylindrica.
Tanya and I recently designed three new native gardens together. The Brisbane gardens feature native species grown by a local community nursery and these species occur naturally within the locality. The new plantings will support native insect and animals as it will provide food, water and shelter. Additional features can be added over time including D.I.Y birdbaths, water bowls and bee hotels.
Brush Turkeys are common in Brisbane and are a protected species ,when they turn up they like to scratch at the new plants often ending up in plant casualties. Temporary plant protectors made from recycled plastic mesh and bamboo stakes can be put in place, keeping them protected until they establish. Brush Turkeys are important to our ecosystems, they distribute the beneficial fungal networks which improve soil conditions for plant health.
